The One Thing To Do That Will Make Your Photography Session Awesome

Make Up: Jillianna McCann

There are times in a photographer’s life when he or she sees someone and thinks “I’ve got to get him or her in front of my camera.” This is how it was with Olivia (above) and her sister, Madeline (We will feature Madeline in a future post). When the thought first came to mind, we envisioned photographing Olivia while she was in full fencing gear (she’s a fencer). That photo project is still on the agenda.

As I was setting up lights in the studio and speaking with Madeline, Scott and Leslie (Olivia’s and Madeline’s parents), I overheard the easy back and forth chit-chat between Olivia and Jillianna, our makeup artist, as Olivia was in the makeup chair. Jillianna is absolutely wonderful with our clients. Her open and friendly nature puts our clients at ease. And folks, that is the secret: being at ease is the number one tip for making a good portrait. Relax. One the reasons our studio has makeup sessions is that it gives you a chance to unwind, get pampered, and get into the “I’m about to make some awesome photographs with an awesome team” mindset.

During our hour long shoot with Olivia, we moved from outfit to outfit, background to background, and lighting setup to lighting setup. Along the way, we reviewed some of the photographs to fine-tune poses, lighting, and expressions. But at each stage, the emphasis was on remaining relaxed.

A few days later at the Reveal and Ordering Session, as the video slideshow of photographs played, Olivia, her sister, mom and dad were all smiles. It took a while to narrow down the photographs to a set that they wanted to have retouched and printed (a good problem to have, by the way).

We really enjoyed working with Olivia. But for us, the most important thing is that she had fun and enjoyed her session. And that shows in the photographs that we made. As the weather warms up and before she heads off to college, hopefully, we can do that portrait of her in full fencing gear. That would be sweet.
